Operation Husky

Purpose

  • The Allied Invasion of Sicily in July of 1943, codenamed “Operation Husky” was the start of the Allies assault on German occupied Europe
  • The objective was to force Italy out of the war

Significance to the U.s

  • The contribution by the U.S in "Operation Husky" gave the Allies the upperhand

Impact on Americans

  • People lost loved ones
  • Women had to take over more jobs while the men were gone
  • The Allies (which included the U.S) had almost taken over all of Sicily by the end of August
  • The U.S. 7th army lost 8 781 men (2 237 killed or missing, 5 946 wounded, and 598 captured)

The outcome

  • The U.S. army lost 8 781 men, 2 237 killed or missing, 5 946 wounded, and 598 captured)
  • The British had 11 843 causalities, 2 062 killed or missing, 7 137 wounded and 2 644 captured.

The outcome

  • Canadian forces had 2 310 causalities, 562 killed, 1 664 wounded, and 84 captured.
  • Germans lost more than 23 000 men, Italian military losses are reported to be 4 325 killed, 32 500 wounded and 116 681 captured
