Phonemic awareness

  • -THE ABILITY TO NOTICE, THINK ABOUT AND WORK W THE INDIVIDUAL SOUNDS IN SPOKEN WORDS.
  • -awareness to the sounds of words before being able to read written sentences.
  • -phonemic awareness is *not* phonics

Phonics

  • - makes a huge growth in reading for students.
  • -there are different approaches to phonics
  • -phonic instruction does not slow down the process of children's learning

fluency

  • -to read a test accurately and quickly
  • -there can be kids who are more fluent and less fluent in reading
  • -fluency developer gradually over time and through substantial practice.
  • -44 percent of the nations 4th graders were low in fluency.

vocab

  • -words we must know to communicate affectively
  • -there are four types of vocabulary (listening, speaking, reading and writing.)
  • -teaching specific words before reading helps both vocabulary learning and reading comprehension.

comprehension

  • -understanding what you are reading
  • -students who can recognize story structure have a greater apprieciation understanding and memory for stories.
  • -there are certain strategies to teach comprehension skills.
