In my summer novel, One Flew Over The Cuckoos Nest, Nurse Ratched is in charge of the patients in the ward. She is given power over the them, but isn't using her power for their benefit. She abuses her authority.
Often times, leaders who are placed in power aren't checked by anyone...I mean no one is above them, so they are not held accountable. They begin to rule in an authoritative way disregarding the rights of others.
Which brings me to our fore fathers wrote the constitution and created a system of government that had checks and balances so that not one branch could have so much control that it could pervert justice. The purpose of checks and balances is to make sure that people in authority do not abuse their power.
With great power comes great responsibility. This is something a lot of people don't realize, they think that when you are place in an authoritative position you are free to do as you please, but that's not how it should be.
Throughout the novel Nurse ratched isn't held accountable by anyone, so her responsibilities are skewed. She does not put her patients above herself, she does not motivate her patients...in fact she actually does not want her patients to get better.... and she does not know how to accept failure. If you are put in a powerful position and you aren't doing those three things then something is wrong.
