OMPHALOCELE

ABOUT OMPHALOCELE

  • Birth defect of the abdominal wall.
  • Infant’s intestines, liver, or other organs stick outside of the belly through the belly button
  • Omphalocele can happen in both a large or small amount.
  • Each year about 775 babies in the United States are born with an omphalocele.
  • This can be trasnlated to a ratio of 1 to 5,386.

CAUSES OF OMPHALOCELE

  • Alcohol and tobacco
  • Certain medications (Women who used selective serotonin-reuptake inhibitors)
  • Obesity before pregnancy

DIAGNOSIS

  • Can be diagnosed during pregnancy or after a baby is born.

TREATMENT OPTIONS

  • Depends on factors of the defect such as..
  • size of the defect
  • presence of other birth defects and chromosome abnormalities
  • baby's gestational age
  • Surgery to place the intestines back into the stomach is possible.

TREATMENT OPTIONS CONTINUED

  • Also, a special covering can be placed over the intestines.
  • They will naturally place themselves back in the stomach.
  • Doctors will then close the opening.
