OJIBWE SEASONS

SPRING (ZIGWAN)

  • Went to Sugar Camp where they produced sap for maple sugar.
  • Repaired existing lodges and built new ones.
  • Met up with other families that they have not seen in a long time.
  • Men went to hunt, and the women made the maple sugar
  • Built canoes

SUMMER (NIBIN)

  • Moved to summer villages
  • Played lacrosse
  • Had ceremonial feasts and dances
  • Grew corn and other crops
  • Picked fruit like strawberries

FALL (DAGWAAGIN)

  • Moved to ether a pond, lake, or stream
  • Grew wild rice
  • Canoed
  • Took crops from the summer to prepare for storage
  • Harvested more crops

WINTER (BIBOON)

  • Moved to their wigwams
  • Ate the stored food
  • Men hunted
  • Children hunted and trapped small animals
  • Women cooked meals and made coats and leggings
