Question

how are traits passed from parent to offspring?

Background Information

An allele is one form of gene for a specific trait or gene product.
A genotype is the genetic makeup of an organism; all the alleles that an organism has.
A phenotype is the observable characteristics or traits of an organism.
Heredity is the passing of genes from parents offspring; the genes are expressed in the traits of the offspring.

Hypothesis

If parents pass down their genes to their children then the child looks similar because the parents alleles will combine to make the new child.

Materials

•Marshmallows
•pretzel sticks
•airheads
•frosting
•candy buttons

Procedures

1. Make data tables like those shown on the sample notebook page
2. You should have two sets of six bags each. Choose choose one set to represent the female parent and one set to represent the male parent. Each bag contains letters written on slips of paper. These letters represent the parents alleles for one trait. Capital letters represent dominant alleles, and lowercase alleles represent recessive alleles.
3. Take a slip from one bag, and record the allele in table 1. Return the slip to the bag. Repeat this for every bag. Record the offspring's genotype as pairs of letters in table 1.
4. Use the table below to determine the phenotype of the offspring.

Analysis

During the experiment we lost our data tables and had a couple of problems putting together our bugs.

Conclusion

Our hypothesis was correct in that when the parents pass their genes down to their children then the child will look similar because the parents alleles will continue to make the new child.

SLE

The SLE we chose was life long learner because throughout this project we learned about offspring models and this may help us for later accede mic challenges.
