Numerical Expression

Mr. Metcalf's 5th grade Mathematics

Essential Questions

  • •What is a numerical expression? •What are parentheses, brackets, and/or braces as they relate to a mathematics problem? •What order do I complete expressions with these symbols? •How do I write a simple expression that record calculations with numbers? •How can I interpret numerical expressions without evaluation?

What is numerical expression?
"A numerical expression represents a single value. It consists of one or more numbers and operations" (Math Goodies, 2015).

What are the parentheses, brackets, and/or braces in a numerical expression for?
Parentheses, brackets, or braces within a numerical expression are there to show importance and are the first part of the problem to solve before any other.

What order do I complete expressions with these symbols?

First, always and forever first.

Here is a mnemonic device to help you remember the order of operations and the order to complete the problem.

•Please Excuse My/Dear Aunt/Sally:

◦Parentheses, brackets, or braces

◦Exponents

◦Multiplication/Division (whichever comes first in the problem)

◦Addition/Subtraction (whichever comes first in the problem)

How do I write a simple expression that record calculations with numbers?
When a problem asks, “add 4 and 6, then multiply by 2” it is just saying the following: 2 x (4 +6).

How can I interpret numerical expressions without evaluation?

The example on the previous slide can also be evaluated in the following method: 2 times the value of 4+6

Now that we have talked about numerical expressions and have some background information are you all ready to get our hands dirty with some problems?
