Whole Numbers

  • A number that isn’t a fraction.
  • Nor a decimal
  • Isn’t negative
  • 0, 1, 2, 3 ......

Natural Numbers

  • Whole numbers > 0
  • Some people call them the “counting numbers”
  • 1, 2, 3, 4 .....

  • All whole numbers (no decimal, nor fraction bits)
  • &
  • Negatives too

Rational Numbers

  • Anything that can be written as a simple fraction or ratio
  • All integers
  • All whole numbers
  • 1/2 (.5), 0.25 = 1/4, 4.12 or 412/100, 1/3 or 0.333....
  • 3/2 = 1.5

Irrational numbers

  • Can't express as a fraction
  • The decimal goes on forever without repeating
  • Root of 2
  • Pi = 3.14 ...... We can’t write a simple fraction that equals pi.
  • Roots of 3 and 99
