WHAT MAKES A NUMBER TALK?

  • Do you use mental math to solve the problem(s)?
  • Are there multiple strategies used?
  • Does the strategy carry throughout each number in the string?

HOW DO I HOLD THE KIDS ACCOUNTABLE?!?

  • Ask students to use finger signals to indicate most efficient strategy.
  • Keep records of problems posed and the cooresponding strategy.
  • Hold small-group number talks throughout the week.
  • Create class strategy charts.
  • Have students solve an exit problem (or weekly assessment) with discussed strategy.
