NUCLEAR FISSION

  • The word Fission means to split apart
  • Uranium atoms are split in controlled chain reactions
  • Particles are release, splitting atom
  • Split atoms hit other atoms and cause them to split
  • Control rods used to control chain reactions

NUCLEAR FUSION

  • Fusion means joining smaller nuclei to make a larger nucleus
  • Energy is given off
  • Scientist working on controlling Nuclear Fusion
  • Creates less radioactive material than Nuclear Fission
  • Supply of fuel can last longer than the sun

COMPARING NUCLEAR FISSION/FUSION

  • Take place in a nuclear power plant
  • Give off energy

CONTRASTING NUCLEAR FISSION AND FUSION

  • Fission: controlled in a chain reaction
  • Fusion: can not be controlled
  • Fission: splits atoms
  • Fusion: brings atoms together to create larger nucleus
