NUCLEAR ENERGY

THE USES AND CONTROVERSY BEHIND NUCLEAR ENERGY

NUCLEAR USES

  • Power (your house)
  • Medicinal (cancer radiation)
  • Agricultural (pesticides)
  • Preservation (food)
  • Environmental (polution)

EVERY DAY LIFE

  • Use when at doctor (xray)
  • Lighting (fluorescent lights)
  • Home-safety (smoke detectors)
  • Pet hygene (cat litter)
  • Food (bananas, nuts, beer)

POSITIVITES

  • Helps treat cancer
  • Low fuel cost
  • Lowers green house gas emissions
  • Powerful and efficient energy
  • Cheap electricity

NEGATIVES

  • Radioactive waste
  • Nuclear accidents
  • Nuclear radiation
  • High investment cost
  • National risk

NEGATIVES CONT.

  • Impact on aquatic life
  • Impact on human life
  • Fuel scarcity
  • Non renuable

PROCESSING

  • Uranium is mined
  • Conversion to UF6
  • Enrichment
  • Fuel fabrication
  • Reactor

PROCESSING CONT.

  • Storage
  • Reprocessing
  • Visrification
  • Disposal of waste
  • Repeat

There are a lot of reasons for nuclear power to be good and bad. Cheap and efficient power! Sounds too good to be true! But disasters occur with this amazing source of power. The earthquake in Fukishima caused a massive nuclear meltdown. Chernobyl was a massive explosion in a nuclear power plant because of reactor testing. Spewing millions of particles of nuclear waste making the area unlivable for about 20,000 years. Attacks on nuclear power plants are also a fear.

NUCLEAR ACCIDENTS

  • Chernobyl (Russia)
  • Fukishima meltdown (Japan)
  • Erwin (U.S)
  • Fosmark (Sweden)
  • Three mile island (U.S)

FUN FACTS

  • The main source of power in The Simpsons is nuclear.
  • Beer is radioactive (not very much though)
  • Nuclear plants use nuclear fission (process of splitting atoms)
  • Every 18 to 24 months a nuclear plant must shut down to dispose of spent uranium fuel
  • 13 percent of the worlds electricity comes from nuclear power plants

FUN FACTS CONT.

  • Nuclear power is being used in over 30 countries
  • Nuclear power powers Mars rovers
  • 1-5 houses and businesses in the U.S are nuclear powered
  • United States power plants produce 2,000 metric tons of waste every year
  • The United States power plants are the most regulated and safe plants in the world
