PRESENTATION OUTLINE

NUCLEAR ENERGY

  • Colin S.

WHAT IS IT

  • Nuclear energy is using uranium to heat water and spin turbines
  • Uses uranium-235, a nonrenewable resource
  • Nuclear energy is a clean source of energy

BACKGROUND

  • Uranium is believed to have come from one or more supernovae
  • It was created around 1.65 billion years ago
  • People think nuclear energy is the same thing as a nuclear bomb

ENERGY

  • Energy is created when uranium is used top heat up water
  • It then spins turbines to create electricity
  • It produces electricity

CURRENT USES

  • The current uses of this resource are to power homes, schools etc.
  • There are over 500 plants powering these things
  • Nuclear energy produces 13% of the worlds electricity

BENEFITS

  • It gives us a clean source of energy
  • It frees us from our dependence of fossil fuels
  • It has 100000 times less waste output

DRAWBACKS

  • People fear that a plant could blow up, but its highly unlikely
  • It leaves behind a lot of radiation and waste
  • Takes roughly 14 years to clean up

FUTURE SUPPLY

  • At our current usage rate we will have about 200 years left of uranium
  • Our dependence on nuclear energy will probably go down
  • We will likely have 200-300 years left

QUESTIONS

  • Where does uranium come from?
  • Is Nuclear Energy a clean source of energy?
  • How many power plants are there?
  • How long is uranium expected to last?
  • Does nuclear energy leave waste behind?
