NORTHWEST REGION

ABOUT THE NORTHWEST REGION.

  • The region consistently includes the states of Oregon, Washington, Idaho, usually Montana and Wyoming.
  • The region is dotted with several large active volcanoes in the Cascade Mountain Range.

WHAT ARE SOME OF THE TRIBES IN THE NORTHWEST REGION?

  • Chinook
  • Tillamook
  • Coast Salish
  • Tlingit
  • Northern Providence- Haida, Tsmshia, Haisla
  • Wekashan Providence- Kwakiutl, the Bella Coola, and the Nuu-chah-nulth.

HOW ARE THE TRIBES SIMILAR AND DIFFERENT?

  • Differences- In the Northern Providence it's matrilineal.
  • In the Wakashan Provenience the tribes were patrilineal.
  • Similarities- They wore skirts, gorns, soft leather, woven wool, and plant fibers.
  • Men wore ornaments on warm days.

WHAT'S YOUR CLIMATE IN THE NORTHWEST REGION.

  • The Northwest climate is cold but relatively dry, with sunny summers in which temperatures rarely rise above 77°F and long bitter winters, during which the thermometer can plunge to -40°F especially north of the Arctic Circle.

HOW DOES THE CLIMATE EFFECT THE TRIBES?

  • They would have to change what they wore.
  • When it would get hotter the ice in the Northwest would melt and flood the crops.
  • When it got cold it was harder to find food and keep warm.

HOW DID LIFES OF THE PEOPLE CHANGE AFTER THE ARRIVAL OF EXPLORES?

  • The northwest Indians benefited when the europeans came because they would trade things and the europeans didn't want to hunt so they bayed the Indians to hunt for them and the Russians where the first to go to see the northwest coast

HOW WOULD IT BE DIFFERENT IF THE EXPLORES NEVER CAME?

  • The tribes would not have some stuff they had, like they wouldn't be able to trades goods and get things the tribes didn't know about.
  • The people wanted to move and their crops were affected. The Europeans took the crops and took the land.

WHAT ARE SOME WAYS YOUR TRIBE SURVIVED?

  • All native Americans lived near the water. Either the pacific ocean or an inland river or lake, and relied heavily on water for their survival.
  • Hunting, Fishing, and gathering edible plants

LIST SOME RELIGIOUS BELIFS OF YOUR TRIBES?

  • The raven also appears in Haida and Tsimshian belief systems. In Tlingit culture, shamans played a crucial role. Shamanic responsibilities included curing illnesses, and they were believed to possess healing powers because they could communicate with spirits.
  • They believed in Animism. the attribution of a soul to plants, inanimate objects, and natural phenomena. The belief in a supernatural power that organizes and animates the material universe.”
