By: Ellie Wiesel

1. Betrayal

Pg: 3-22

Quote: "On the seventh day of Passover, the curtains finally rose: the Germans arrested the leader of the Jewish Community"
(Wiesel, 10)

I chose the chapter name to be 'Betrayal' because when the Germans first came to Sighet They were very nice to the Jews. Then they betrayed them by putting them in ghettos, not giving them freedom, making them wear the Yellow Star etc.

There is a quote called, "An enemy who slaps you in the face is better than a friend who stabs you in the back." That is what the Germans did. they stabbed the Jews in the back. Hence I chose this picture.

I chose the quote above fro the book because until that time the Germans were friends with the Jews. But now the Jews are starting to see the Germans real colors.

2. Irksome moments

Pg: 23-28

"Fire! I see a fire! I see a fire! There was a moment of panic. Who had screamed? It was Mrs. Schachter."(Wiesel,24)

I chose the name of the chapter to be 'Irksome Moments,' because the Jews were getting irritated when Mrs.Schacter was screaming and troubling
everybody about something that was not there. And the Jews were neither allowed to lie down nor sit down.

I chose this picture which says 'Wi-fi Not Available' because nowadays people spend most of our time on the internet and without it, we feel none of our tasks is done. We get irritated, espeacially teachers and students in schools because nowadays everything is done online and Wi-fi plays a vital role in students completing their projects. This relates to how much the Jews got annoyed by the Germans.

I chose this quote because it shows how irksome Mrs.Scachter was and the way she was disturbing others by not letting them rest.

3. Submission

 Pg 29-46

Quote: "' Then he asked my father who answered:
'I'm fifty.'
'No.' The man now sounded angry. 'Not fifty. You're forty. Do you hear? Eighteen and Forty.'"

I chose this quote because it depicts how the inmates also treated the Jews harshly and made the Jews agree to what they were saying.

I chose the chapter name to be 'Submission' because it means to accept a superior authority to rule over you. The Jews were under this circumstance and the Germans were ruling over them.

I chose this picture picture because it depicts that the Jews are submitting themselves to God. This was equivalent to submit themselves to Germans.

4. Transition

Pg: 47-65
Quote: " Juliek explained to me, 'We work in a warehouse of electrical materials not fat from here. The work is neither difficult nor dangerous.'" (Wiesel, 49)

I chose the chapter name to be 'Transition' because Elie is now moved to a different camp and is working with electrical parts. Transition means change and he faced this change in a bad way.

I chose this quote because it depicts This is when he starts working in a Kommando and everything is new for him. Juliek is his friend who introduces what they do in that particular Kommando to Elie.

I chose this picture because in this chapter Elie faces the changes in many different ways. For eg. New Kommando, New Kapo, New Fiends and New Enemies.

5. Lost faith

Pg: 66-84

Quote: " In days gone by, Rosh
Hashanah had dominated my life. I knew that my sins grieved the Almighty and so I pleaded forgiveness. In those days. I fully believed that the salvation of the world depended on every one of my deeds, on every one of my prayers.
But know, I no longer pleaded for anything. I was no longer able to lament. On the contrary, I felt very strong. I was the accuser, God was the accused."

I chose this quote because this quote depicts how much belief Elie has lost in God, since the beginning of the book. He had changed a lot and decided not to fast for Rosh Hashanah.

I chose the name of the chapter to be 'Lost Faith' because this chapter is abot Jewish new year- Rosh Hashanah, and Elie used to fast before even though his dad was against it. But now he
thinks that there is no God and decides no to fast with his father.

This is a synagogue. Before the Holocaust he always used to pray in the synagogue but after i

6. On the run

Pg: 85-97
" Faster you filthy dogs!" We are no longer marching, we are running. Like automatons. The SS were running as well, weapons in hand. We looked as though we were running from them." (Wiesel, 85)

I chose the chapter name to be 'On The Run' because The Germans were evacuating all the Jews and the Jews were told to run. If anyone stopped they would get shot by an SS or many people might step over the person. The SS were also running with the Jews.

The picture itself says 'On The Run' therefore I chose this picture.

I chose this quote because it depicts how harshly the SS treated the Jews. They had to be running or they would get shot. And that too it was winter and although it was freezing they had to be on the run

7. death or survival

Pg: 98-103
Quote: "The train stopped in an empty field. The abrupt halt had awakened a few sleepers. They stood looking around startled.
Outside, the SS walked by, shouting:
'Throw out all the dead! Outside all the corpses!'" (Wiesel, 99)

I chose this quote because this quote depicts that, when the SS came to check on the Jews and throw away all the dead bodies,
some of them were lucky that they were awake when the SS came. Therefore, their body wasn't thrown out. But the SS threw away most of the bodies.
It was whether death or survival.

I chose 'Death or Survival' to be the name of the chapter because when the SS checked on the Jews (didn't matter if they were sleeping), they would throw them out. Therefore, they had to be awake for the SS not to throw them out.

This picture depicts how the Jews were dressed during winter. They had all become so lean that they could fit 100 Jews in one cattle car. They were evacuating all the Jews during Winter. Hence I chose this picture.

8. Remorse

Pg: 104-112
Quote: " His last word had been my name. He called out to me and I had not answered.
I did not weep, and it pained me that I could not weep. But I was out of tears." (Wiesel, 112)

I chose this quote because it depicts how sad and guilty Elie
was when he got to know his father was no more.

I chose the chapter name to be 'Remorse' because remorse means felling really sad in your heart but not being able to express your feelings. Elie was in this situation through out the chapter. Hence, I named it 'Remorse.'

The picture shows a sad boy who has broken his vase that he made and he doesn't want to express his feelings. Elie was in this state too.

9. Liberty and desolation

Pg: 113-115
Quote: " OUR FIRST ACT AS FREE MEN was to throw ourselves onto the provisions. That's all we thought about. No thought of revenge or of parents. Only of bread."

I chose the chapter name to be 'Liberty and Desolation' because as soon as the American tank came and won the battle over the Germans, the Jews were free. But they were all desolated.
They neither had anywhere to go to nor did they have their families to stay with. Most of them went to The US.

I chose this picture because it shows how desolated the Jews were and how free the Jews were in a desolated place.
They didn't have anywhere to go to.

I chose this quote because it depicts how dehumanized the Jews were even when they were free. They never thought
of revenge. It also depicts that they didn't think about anything except for bread and where they would live.
