chap 6 quote 1 pg 70

"I could hear only the violin, it was though Juliek's soul was the bow."
The men from the Buna were sitting in the shed as death lingered in the air and below me laid my little polish friend from the electrical ware house Juliek. As death lingered through the air Juliek played his little violin to comfort the dying men.

It's just so amazing how a little dying polish boy gives his last bit of life to comfort the dying and the living men with dying hope that somewhere somehow hope would come for them.

And was immediately extinguished, the shadow threw itself upon him, felled to the ground stunned with blows the old man cried Meir. Meir, my boy don't you recognize me?
