Night "chapter" naming Project

by Vai Vimil

Label: Chapter 1(p.3-22)
Rejection
Quote: "Even I did not belive him" (Weisel, 7)

I chose the rejection for his part of the book, because Moishe the Beetle has just escaped and witnessed the first experience of the holocaust. So Elie is trying to reject that thought in his head and trying to not believe any of that. My quote which says "Even I [Elie] did not believe him" (Wiesel, 7) says it directly that he didn't believe this and wanted to reject it. Also my picture is a picture with an x on it for no or reject.

CHAPTER II (p.23-28)
: Smell of Human Flesh
Quote: "In front of us, those flame. In the air, the smell of burning flesh." ( Wiesel, 28)

I chose the title of smell of human flesh because when Mrs. Schacter was yelling "fire, fire!". The fire was of human flesh and when Elie finally got to Auschwitz first thing he noticed was smoke in the air, and smell of human flesh. The quote that I have cited sort of properly states that the fire was the effect of burning flesh. I chose a picture of fire because it showed fire and the fire. Burned the humans, which caused the foul smell in the air.

Chapter III (p,29-46)
Getting beat, beat up and beat again
Quote: "Kapos were beating us again , I no longer felt the pain." (Wiesel, 36)

I chose the name getting beat, beat up and beat again because though out the whole chapter. They (the Jews and Poles) were dehumanized and beat up by the Kapos. Every place they went (barber, clothing, selection...) they got beat up. I chose the quote, "Kapos were beating us again , I no longer felt the pain." (Wiesel, 36) because it stated how badly they were treated and if you don't feel the pain after a while. I think is a bad thing. In my picture there is a person getting punched in the face. Even though the prisoners didn't get punched that much and more whipped, the beatings were terrible.

Chapter IV (p.47-65)
Why god, why?
Quote: "'Where is merciful God, where is He?' someone behing me was asking..." (Wiesel, 64)

I chose the name "why god, why?" because throughout all of this bad stuff and the darkness, God it not there to make things equal and fair. Instead the devil is here to bring darkness and bad stuff. I chose the quote, "'Where is merciful God, where is He?' someone behind me was asking..." (Wiesel, 64), because it showed the lack of god and how the prisoners feel. Also because of this Elie's identity changes. I chose this back ground because a nice way to show the religious aspect of Auschwitz and many of the concentration camps.

Chapter V (p.66-84)
So close yet so far
Quote: "They were, quite simply, liberated by the Russians, two days after the evacuation." (Wiesel, 82)

The chapter name is chose is "So close yet so far" because if Elie had stayed in the infirmary they would have gotten freed and this was a huge mistake they (Elie and his father) mad. I chose the quote, "They were, quite simply, liberated by the Russians, two days after the evacuation." (Wiesel, 82). I chose it because I directly stated in the book that, they would have gotten freed if they stayed. The picture I chose is about a boy reaching for the light from the darkness. He is close, but can't reach far enough.

Chapter VI (p.85-97)
The Journey
Quote: "An icy wind was blowing violently. But we marched without faltering." (Wiesel,85)

The for chapter 6 is "the journey" because it was mainly about how they went to the new concentration camp. This was significant because they were running/marching in snow and it was very difficult. The quote "An icy wind was blowing violently. But we marched without faltering." (Wiesel,85), states how they were marching or running in the cold icy weather. The picture is of a person running in snow.

Chapter VII (p.98-103)
Every man for themselves!
Quote: "Men started hurling themselves against each other, trampling, tearing at and mauling each other each other." (Wiesel, 101)

I chose the name "Every man for themselves!" because it was basically every man fighting for food/bread for them self or a family member. This action really dehumanized the prisoners and made them turn on each other. My quote, "Men started hurling themselves against each other, trampling, tearing at and mauling each other each other." (Wiesel, 101), states how they were each other for bread. Obviously my picture is a picture of bread which is what they were fighting for.

Chapter VIII (p.104-112)
Free at last!
Quote: "I might have found something like: Free at last!..." (Wiesel, 112)

The name of the chapter is "Free at last!" because Elie is "free" from burden from his father and can finally have a little enjoyment. Like not having to share his food/ soup or water with his dad. The quote, "I might have found something like: Free at last!..." (Wiesel, 112), says that he has no more burden of his father. The picture is of a sky and the open freshness of life.

Chapter IX (p.113-115)
Corps of the Body
Quote: "From the depths of the mirror, a corpse was contemplating me. The look in his eyes as he gazed at me has never left me." (Wiesel,115)

The name of this chapter is "corps of the body" because when Elie finally looks at himself in the the mirror after 3 years all he sees is corps. The quote, "From the depths of the mirror, a corpse was contemplating me. The look in his eyes as he gazed at me has never left me." (Wiesel,115), really helped realize and imgaine what happened. I chose a picture of Elie Wiesel because in the end that is how he looked like.
