WHat is Nicotine?

  • Nicotine is a toxic colorless or yellowish oily liquid. It is the active constituent in tobacco.
  • It acts as a stimulant in small doses. In large amounts it blocks the action of autonomic of nerve and skeletal muscles cells.
  • Nicotine is also used in insecticides.

How is it used?

  • Nicotine is smoked in cigarettes, pipes, and cigars. It can be chewed and sniffed if in a powder.

What are the Effects?

  • More Common: Mouth sores, blisters, or irritation, nausea or vomiting, sore throat
  • Less Common: Unsual tiredness or weakness, diarrhea, dizziness, heartburn, mouth, tooth, jaw, or neck pain, problems with teeth.
  • There are also cardiovascular, respiratory, dermatologic, and nervous system issues.
