LOCATION

  • Nicaragua is the biggest country in Central America.
  • Honduras borders Nicaragua from the North and Costa Rico borders from the south.
  • The Atlantic Ocean and the Pacific Ocean also border Nicaragua.

HISTORY

  • In 1522 Spanish explorers arrived at what is today known as Nicaragua.
  • Archeologists today believe that native tribes that lived there where related to those who lived in Mexico, because they shared so much in culture.
  • Early Nicaraguans drank hot chocolate, but it was different from modern day hot chocolate it was a mixture of hot water,unsweetened chocolate,and spicy red peppers.
  • After a long fight in 1938 Nicaragua finally became independent.

PEOPLE/ LIFESTYLE

  • The population in Nicaragua is 5,907,881
  • Baseball is a very common and popular sport in Nicaragua.
  • Only about 5% of Nicaraguans have purely native heritage.

CULTURE

  • Beans and rice,gallo pinto,locally made cheese,and tortillas are cultural foods.
  • Nicaraguan people are mostly Roman Catholic and attend church each week.
  • Parisima is a popular holiday celebrated on Dec.7.
  • The holiday is to honor Virgin Mary.
  • Most art is traditional handicraft, Nicaragua also has a strong lean for poetry.

GOVERMENT

  • Nicaragua's president is Daniel Ortega.
  • Nicaragua was damaged by a lot of war,goverment corruption, and natural disasters in the past.
  • Manufacturing is a big part of the economy and is getting bigger.
  • The countries that have owed debt on Nicaragua forgave all of the debt to help Nicaragua rebuild their country.
