PRESENTATION OUTLINE

3D PRINTERS

By Tom Hancock and Audrey McCutchen

FIRST PRINTER

The first 3D printer was invented in 1983 by Chuck Hull

Materials
Used UV light to etch layers in plastic. At first he had to hand-write the instructions and was limited to simple designs. At first cost hundreds of thousands of dollars, now more like $1,300.

CURRENT PATENTS

  • Makerbot
  • Flashforge
  • Up!
  • Jm prime

Disciplines of engineering:
mechanical engineering helps with programming, math, physics, build/ repair printers (but now for almost anything like art, bones- medical and fossils, etc.).

Major changes
Depending on the time range, it depends...
Some 3d printers are going through a phase where instead of having to assemble the product, they're pre made, just depends on the size.

Global impact
More efficient than how we make / send stuff places, new median for art, printing tools for astronauts in space, can mass produce objects you couldn’t before, doctors are printing cells and tissues, and people can print objects at home.

TIMELINE

  • 1983/1984- first version of the 3D printer by Chuck Hull
  • 1999- organ made by patients cells put in human
  • 2002- Scientists make working kidney
  • 2008- can print printer parts and first prosthetic leg made and used.
  • 2009 prints first blood vessel and people can now buy a kit to make their own 3D printer.

TIMELINE CONTINUED

  • 2011- prints first plane/car and can now print in silver or gold
  • 2012- first prosthetic jaw made and used on a person.
