Newton's First Law Of Motion

by Nolan

An object at rest stays at rest unless acted upon by an outside force.

For example, a piece of paper on the table will stay at rest on the table unless, say, a fan blows it off.

An object in motion stays in motion unless acted upon by an outside force.

For example, a wheel rolling down a hill will stay in motion until it hits something with a bigger inertia.

Inertia is the chance to have an object change its motion. For an object to do so, its inertia must be overthrown. The more mass an object has, the more inertia.

For example, a ball on the ground will stay at rest until its inertia is overcome by the kicker.

real World Examples

Charlie is playing pool. He hits the cue ball and it hit the 6 ball into the pocket. Why? The cue ball acts as an outside force and causes the resting 6 ball to move.

When you are riding in a car and the breaks are slammed suddenly, what does your body do? It flies forward. The breaks are able to stop the car, but not the passenger(s). You keep moving when the car does not.
