  • Iroquois and Algonquin tribes inhabited the New York area
  • Giovanni da Verrazano was the first settler to discover the area
  • 1524 was the year New York Harbor was discovered
  • New York State was named after the King of England's brother, the Duke of York
  • The Empire State was the nickname that George Washington gave to New York State

  • The Empire State Building was built in 1931 and was the tallest building in the world
