NEW JERSEY

THE 11TH COLONY

CHAPTER 1: THE GREAT BEGINNING

  • founded by Lord John Berkeley and Sir George Carteret in 1664
  • John and George were friends and supporters of King Charles II during the English Civil war
  • After naming it after the British Island of Jersey in the English Channel, John and George claimed the land
  • Land given away from Duke of York after being offered by King Charles II
  • Lord John and Sir George wanted to bring in colonists after obtaining the land
  • To attract settlers and make money, they offered land at low prices and full religious toleration

CHAPTER 2: THE SETTLERS

  • Catholics, Jews, and Lutherans came to New Jersey looking for religious freedom
  • Puritans came to New Jersey, even though most of them already lived in New Jersey
  • Quakers (followers of an English preacher named George Fox) were attracted to New Jersey

CHAPTER 3: IMPORTANT ONES

  • John Berkeley and George Carteret were rewarded land of New Jersey by King Charles II and became its first governors
  • Elizabeth Haddon Estaugh was one of the early New Jersey Quakers and became the proprietor of Haddonfield in 1701
  • Captain William Kidd was a New Jersey pirate. Said to have buried treasure at Cape May Point in 1699
  • Blackbeard said to have buried treasure in New Jersey beach. Killed a crew member and his dog so their ghosts could guard the loot

CHAPTER 4: IMPORTANT EVENTS

  • In 1664 Duke of York gives New Jersey to John Berkeley and George Carteret after rewarded by King Charles II
  • In 1676 New Jersey was divided into East Jersey and West Jersey
  • In 1702 East Jersey and West Jersey were united as a royal colony
  • In 1746 college of New Jersey (Princeton University) was founded
  • In 1790 Trenton was named New Jersey’s capital

CHAPTER 5: THE FACTS

  • New Jersey promised cheap land and religious freedom
  • Because of religious freedom, New Jersey was more diverse than any other colony
  • Many pirate treasures have been buried in New Jersey
  • The New Jersey mines were some of the earliest mines in colonial America, used to mine for copper and iron ore
  • New Jersey started glassmaking in America, which allowed them to make bottles, jars, and pitchers
  • The tanners made leather from animal skins which made saddles and animal harnesses
