Early in his childhood Nelson Mandela's father died in 1930, Nelson was only 12. Hearing the elders stories of his ancestors valors during the wars of resistance, he dreamed also of making his own contribution to the freedom struggle of his people. Nelson Mandela began his studies for Bachelor of Arts degree at the University College of Fort Hare but did not complete the degree there as he was expelled for joining in a student protest. He completed his BA through the University of South Africa and went back to Fort Hare for his graduation in 1943.
1994- Co-founds the ANC Youth League; marries Evelyn Ntoko Mase - they had four children.
1951- Elected president of the ANCYL
1952- Defiance Campaign begins: arrested and charged violating the suppression of Communism Act; Convicted with J.S Moroka Sisulu and 17 others. Sentenced to nine months imprisonment with hard labour, suspended for two years; Elected first if ANC deputy Presidents; opens South Africa's first black firm with Olivia Tambo.
1994- Nelson was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize with FW de Klerk. Also elected by Parliament the first President of Democratic South Africa.
In 2001 Nelson Mandela was diagnosed with prostate cancer. 2011 he was admitted to a hospital in Johannesburg where he was diagnosed with a chest infection. He was discharged after two nights.
