  • Born in May 10, 1918
  • Born to the Thembu royal family

EARLY CAREER

  • Joined the African National Congress im 1942
  • The group believed in methods of boycott and nonviolence
  • For twenty years Mandela directed peacefully
  • In 1961 Mandela began to believe in armed struggle
  • He orchestrated a three day national workers' strike

  • A year after the strike he was sentenced to life in prison
  • He contracted tuberculosis in his twenty seven years in prison
  • Was a symbol for black resistance in South Africa
  • Offered to be realeased if he would abandon violent protests
  • He denied but was soon released when President Botha passed

  • In 1991 he was elected as the first black South African president
  • After leaving office, he devoted a campaign for peace and social justice in his country
  • Found the Nelson Mandela Organization and The Elders
  • In 2002 he became an advocate for awareness of AIDS
  • Won the Nobel Peace Prize in 1993

MANDELA AND JERMIAH

  • Both persecuted and stood up for what they believed in
  • Both were imprisoned
  • Jeremiah is also known as the weeping prohet

LEGACY

  • Considered a prophet because he has conrtibuted in many ways for social justice like Jeremiah
  • Was an advocate for South Africa when they needed it the most
  • Died on December 5,2013 from lung infection
  • On July 18, his birthday is known as Mandela International Day
