RESISTANCE AND CHANGE

THE STRUGGLE TO FOSTER A CULTURALLY ENGAGED COMMUNITY
The title of our session is...
We should add "at a primarily white institution or in my case a non-native institution"

A principal reason why we are grateful to present at NCORE is that is provides a forum for us to share our story at both the diepartment level as well as within in our own individual work. To invite you in and elicit participation we will be using a variety of pedagogical strategies built around resistance narratives. These narratives highlight the voices of faculty and students, both within the department and cross e broader campus, that resist or don't see value in building a healthy, responsible and culturally engaged community of learners.

One of the activities we engaged in as we worked on this presentation was to create a wordle- anyone familiar with this tool - basically we entered our abstract and it built a visual around some of the key ideas/thoughts embedded in our presentation

What do y'all see?

AGENDA

Before we get started I want to give just a brief overview of where we are going this afternoon

The first part of this presentation will be performance based - we submitted stories to Lise around the idea of resistnace and change. she took those stories and constructed a script. So what you will see are snap shots/performances of resistance we have faced in the past year alone.

One way we wanted to elicit participation from u all is by back channeling. Anyone heard the term? Often times at conferences like these voices go silent just sheerly based on the format, # of pEople etc.

At any point while we are presenting you can leave a comment, suggestion,or even just an emotional response to what u see or hear. We will check in pERiodically but this will serve two purposes 1) fodder for the questions/comments at the end and 2) for us to reflect back on and renengage when we get back home
