Native American Boarding Schools

MISSION SCHOOLS

  • Forbidden to speak native language
  • Seperated from families
  • Had to give up meaningful natives names for english ones

CHARLES EASTMAN/OHIYSEA

  • Born near Redwood falls
  • Did not like the mission school
  • Accepted to preparatory department of Beloit college in Wisconsin
  • Also Knox college, Kimball union academy, and finally Dartmouth

GOVERNMENT FUNDED SCHOOLS

  • First off- reservation school was Carlisle Industrial school
  • Curriculum was half day academics and half day vocational curriculum

CARLISLE INDIAN BOARDING SCHOOL

  • Was a military style school
  • Uniforms for boys dresses for girls
  • Had regular drill practice
  • Children were ranked

ROUGH ROCK DEMONSTRATION SCHOOL

  • Opened 1966
  • Opened in Navajo nation in Arizona
  • First indian controlled school in modern times
