In 1848 the kingdom adopted a liberal constitution. To the Italian middle class this seemed a good plan. They had a unification under Piedmont-Sardinia.

Not long after, Camillo di Cavour was named prime minister. He was a cunning statesman who worked tirelessly to expand power.

Cavour provoked war against Austria. Sardinia succeeded taking all of northern Italy, except Venetia.
