DESCRIPTION

  • Narcolepsy is an disorder in which someone is proned to sleeping attacks
  • This can happen when in any relaxing position at anytime of day or night
  • These sleep episodes are uncontrollable
  • Those with Narcolepsy get the same, or less, amount of sleep.

ANATOMY AND PHYSIOLOGY

  • It is caused by damage to the hypocretin system
  • Hypocretin helps regulate appetite and sleep
  • The brain does not go into a state of normal doziness
  • Instead goes directly into REM sleep (Rapid Eye Movement)
  • Insufficient amount of brain cells

SYMPTOMS

  • (EDS) Excessive Daytime Sleepiness
  • Cataplexy (triggered by fear, stress, and laughter)
  • Sleep paralysis
  • Hallucinations
  • Disrupted nocturnal sleep
