NAPOLEONIC ERA

Group 5: James, Colt, Brett, and Brad

NAPOLEON'S BACKGROUND

  • Born in 1769
  • Went to military school in France
  • Became a general at the early age of 26
  • He's considered one of the greatest generals of all time

NAPOLEON AS DICTATOR

  • Establish dictator of France through the coup d' etat in 1799
  • Citizens of France accepted Napoleon as their dictator
  • Napoleon abided by the ideals of the declaration of rights of man
  • No hitler here BOIz and gurls, but he still wanted people to obey orders

THE CONSULATE

  • Napoleon gave himself unlimited power by centralizing the government
  • Napoleon separated the government into three executive branches
  • All the legislative bodies could do was reject or approve napoleons decisions
  • When Napoleon ordered votes he used a plebiscite (People vote yes or no only, Nothing else)

ACCOMPLISHMENTS IN GOVERNMENT

  • In 1790, Napoleon adjusted the French's government relation with the Catholic Church. The two came to an agreement.
  • Napoleon cleared the slate with France's foreign enemies, brining peace. ✌️
  • He also constructed a prospering economy, by implementing a system called Napoleon code into the French laws

NAPOLEON AS EMPEROR

  • Napoleon became a successful general during the French Revolution
  • Became a politician after his general days
  • Got to a high point in French politics
  • Crowned himself emperor in 1804

THE REORGANIZATION OF EUROPE

INCREASED NATIONALIM

  • Napolèonic code was put in effect in all places conquered by France
  • As Napoleon went around conquering, the people within his secured borders started getting increased feelings of nationalism ( love and motivation of one's country) for their home country not France
  • The opponents of napoleon's armies grew stronger 💪

THE PENINSULAR WAR

  • Portugal refused to follow the continental system because it required trade with great Britain
  • Napoleon reacted by sending his army in to conquer Portugal and Spain, in which they did . 🇫🇷
  • After a five year war, Spain ( with British help) retook their land

CATASTROPHE IN RUSSIA

THE GRAND ARMY

  • The almighty napoleon gathered 600,000 soldiers to march east into Russia.
  • As Napoleon pushed Russia defenders back, they used a scorch- earth policy ( burning everything the Grand Army could possibly use) to decrease their resources
  • Napoleon seized Moscow, but was losing soldiers rapidly due to the harsh winters and lack of resources, so he ordered a retreat in October 1812
  • Russian armies followed the retreat and began invading France

FINAL DEFEAT!

  • Basically, the allies of France took advantage of napoleon's loss in Russia and broke their Alliances to destroy France {#Backstab 😧}
  • In 1813 Napoleon's army fought these allied traitors and were defeated. This lead to the capturing of Paris in March 1814
  • Soon the allies held complete control of France , and allowed napoleon to escape to an island near Italy in exchange for the Thrown of France. Louis xviii became king of France.

THE HUNDRED DAYS

HUNDRED DAYS INFO.

  • In 1815 Napoleon secretly arrived in France again.
  • Louis xviii and his family didn't please the French people which made it easy for Napoleon to gather another small army and reclaim Paris
  • Napoleon was back in control of France!!!!! 👑🙀
  • Napoleon wished his disputes with his early opponents were over, but he was wrong.
  • They came back and overthrew Napoleon again in late 1815.
  • Napoleon later died in 1821 while living on a guarded island in the Atlantic
