VIOLENCE IN THE OLD WEST

The western frontier was not very violent

It is said that the western frontier is more civilized and safer than American society today

The main reason people killed on the western frontier is when somebody disrespected them

THE HISTORY OF THE U.S. MARSHALS

The U.S. Marshals are the oldest federal law enforcement agency

Besides apprehending criminals U.S. Marshals had to conduct death sentences, take the census every ten years, and pursued counterfeiters

Marshals were in charge of the law and order in the Old west

U.S. Marshals captured runaway slaves

During the civil war the U.S. Marshals confiscated the confederacy's property and captured their spies

FORT SMITH ARKANSAS

Fort Smith is the setting for the Novel True Grit

The Fort was converted into a court and jail by Arkansas in 1872

The jail was referred to as "Hell on the border" because is was considered one of the worst jails

The judge at the court was judge Parker who decided if the person was guilty and needed to be hanged or innocent

This served as the courthouse of the western frontier because it was the only courthouse west of St. Lewis

WILLIAM QUANTRILL AND QUANTRILL'S RAIDERS

William Quantrill's was born in the year 1837

William Quantrill was a Confederate guerrilla leader during the civil war.

Quant rill was mortally wounded in a Union ambush and died at age 27 in 1865

He led horrible raids against innocent people for years
