ZEUS

  • Zeus was the god of the sky and ruler of the Olympian gods.
  • He is married to Hera.
  • Symbols: Eagle, Shield, Thunderbolt, Oak Tree
  • His weapon is a thunderbolt.
  • He is known as Jupiter to the Romans.

HERA

  • Zeus’s wife
  • She was worshipped by women as the protector of marriage.
  • Known as Juno to the Romans
  • Goddess of Marriage
  • Symbols: Peacock, Cow

HADES

  • Ruler of the underworld and the dead.
  • Known as Pluto to the Romans.
  • Zeus' brother.
  • Symbols: Helmet, Metals, Jewels

POSEIDON

  • God of the Seas
  • Married to Amphitrite
  • Known as Neptune to Romans
  • Symbols: Trident, Horse, Bull

HESTIA

  • Hestia was the sweetest, gentlest and most generous of all the Olympians
  • Zeus' sister.
  • Known as Vesta to the Romans.
  • Symbol: Fire
  • Goddess of the Hearth

ARTEMIS

  • Goddess of the Hunt, Moon, & Children
  • Artemis was the twin sister of Apollo.
  • Known as Diana to the Romans
  • She protected young animals and looked after young children.
  • Symbols: Stag, Moon, Cypress

APOLLO

  • God of Light, Truth, Healing, Archery, & Music
  • Apollo was perhaps the most loved of all the gods.
  • He was handsome, talented, charming and honest.
  • Known as Apollo to the Romans.
  • Bow & arrows, lyre, raven, and a wreath and branch of laurel.

ATHENA

  • Goddess of Wisdom, War, Arts, Crafts, &City
  • She carried a magic shield that turned her enemies to stone.
  • The city of Athens was named after her.
  • Known as Minerva to the Romans.
  • Symbols: Owl, Shield, and Olive Branch

HEPHAESTUS

  • God of the Forge
  • He had a deformed foot.
  • Known as Vulcan to the Romans.
  • Hephaestus made armor and weapons for the gods and goddesses.
  • Symbols: Fire, Blacksmith’s Hammer

Aphrodite

  • Goddess of Love & Beauty
  • Aphrodite put on a magic belt that made other men fall in love with her.
  • Aphrodite’s power to love was so great that even wild lions and tigers were tamed in her presence.
  • Known as Venus to the Romans.
  • Symbols: Dove, Sparrow, Swan, Myrtle

HERMES

  • God of Motion, Sleep, Dreams, Commerce, &Travelers
  • Hermes was graceful, clever and quick
  • He was Zeus’s messenger
  • Known as Mercury to the Romans.
  • Symbols: Wand, Winged Sandals, Winged Helmet

ARES

  • God of War
  • He thrived on violence, battles and wars.
  • Ares was a fiery, bloody character.
  • Known as Mars to the Romans.
  • Symbols: Vulture, Dog

DIONYSUS

  • God of wine and vegetation.
  • Known as Bacchus to the Romans.
  • He invented wine and spread the art of tending grapes.
  • Son of Zeus.
  • Symbols: Thyrsos, Flute, Wine barrels.
