PRESENTATION OUTLINE

STUDENTS LIVE IN A PARTICIPATORY CULTURE

  • They solve games with each other
  • Express themselves in video
  • They express themselves in snapshots
  • They post it all using social media
  • So why not use this in the classroom?

1ST: SUBSTITUTE

  • Introduce topic with new media
  • Maybe comic strips/political cartoons
  • Maybe math in music or math in sports apps
  • There won't be any functional change just yet
  • But it's something new and taps kids passions

2ND: AUGMENTATION

  • Give them a direct tool with a functional improvement
  • Have them timeline pictures or create a remix video
  • Get an interactive app where students use the skills digitally
  • For example: tinker box has students build devices..
  • lots of physics, engineering, and math in a fun program

MODIFICATION

  • Now turn the kids loose! Have them...
  • Research & chart game statistics
  • Examine the style of an artist and recreate it
  • Explain the economic impact of natural disaster?
  • ie: Jobs lost? Schools closed? Streets gone?

REDEFINE

  • Individual projects are assigned
  • Make a museum explaining the topic
  • Build a model to simulate that math process
  • Then bring the projects together as a group issue
  • Which project best explains the assignment? Why?
