My Learning Styles

by Leslie Allen

My preferred learning style is Auditory and I also have a strong preference for
Reflective Learning and a moderate preference for Sensing.

I prefer to learn by listening and often recall the words I've heard in my mind.

I retain and understand information best by thinking about it quietly first.

I am detail oriented and I tend to be good at memorizing facts.

Strategies for Auditory Learning

A strategy that I already employ is to read and state problems out loud and debate the answer. Some might refer to this as talking to yourself!

I plan to try tape recording myself and playing it back and also creating jingles. To help learn math I will write the steps to a problem out in sentences and then read them out loud.

Strategies for Reflective Learning

One strategy that will help me retain what I've learned is to stop occasionally and go over what I've read and then think of ways to use the information or questions to ask.

I will also rewrite or outline lessons or concepts in my own words.

Strategies for Sensing

Strategies for Sensing Learners include asking instructors for specific examples of how concepts and procedures apply to the real world.

Another strategy that I will put into practice is brainstorming with classmates and friends.

I was not surprised to find out that my preferred learning style is Auditory or that I have a preference for Reflective Learning. I was, however, surprised to discover that I have a preference for Sensing.

Going forward in my academic career I plan to continue using the study methods that have worked for me so far such as reading out loud or thinking quietly. I'm looking forward to incorporating the new strategies that I've learned about like recording myself, summarizing concepts in my own words, and applying ideas in the real world.

Adding new ways of learning to my repertoire can only increase my chances of success at APU!
