THE BIRTH AND DEATH OF GANDHI

  • Gandhi was born on October 2, 1869
  • He was born in Porbandar, India
  • Mahatma died on January 30, 1948 in New Delhi, India
  • The cause of his death was assassination by firearm
  • He lived to be 78 years old

THE GANDHIS

  • Mahatma's parents were Putlibai Gandhi (mother) and Karamchand Gandhi (father)
  • The name of his spouse was Kasturba Gandhi
  • His children are Harilal, Manilal, Ramdas and Devdas

GANDHI'S CHARACTERISTICS

  • He was very wise; he knew the difference between what's right and what's wrong
  • He was also very responsible for his actions
  • He respected others and never gave up without giving it his all
  • Gandhi stood up for what he thought was right and didn't let anyone else's opinions get in his way
  • He was honest and sincere because he felt being honest was the right thing to do
  • Gandhi never had any villainous traits

THE POWER OF NONVIOLENCE

  • Gandhi took the religious principle of ahimsa (doing no harm) and turned it into a non-violent tool for mass action
  • He used it to fight social evils such as racial discrimination and untouchability as well
  • Gandhi called it "satyagraha" which means 'truth force'
  • In this doctrine the aim of any non-violent conflict was to convert the opponent; to win over his mind and his heart and pursuade him to your point of view

THE SALT MARCH

  • The Salt Tax essentially made it illegal to sell or produce salt, allowing a complete British monopoly
  • Since salt is necessary in everyone's daily diet, everyone in India was affected
  • In 1930 Gandhi proposed a non-violent march protesting the British Salt Tax
  • Thousands of Indians followed Gandhi from his retreat near Ahmedabad to the Arabian Sea coast, a distance of some 240 miles
  • The march resulted in the arrest of nearly 60,000 people, including Gandhi himself
  • India finally was granted its independence in 1947
