The Republic of Kenya

Our History

Kenya is located in East Africa, on the equator.

The Republic of Kenya is named after Mount Kenya, the second tallest Mountain in Africa.

Our country is endowed with a rich historical, cultural and natural heritage and is popularly known as the Cradle of Mankind.

The first people to settle in Kenya were indigenous African communities who migrated from various parts of the continent

Other visitors included traders, explorers and tourists who came in from various parts of the world such as Portugal, Arabia, Roman empire, India and Greece

Some visitors settled and intermarried with the locals giving rise to a new Swahili culture along the Coast. Islam and Kiswahili language were introduced

The British declared Kenya a colony and Protectorate on 1st July 1895 and established a formal British administration

The seventy years of colonial rule in Kenya were characterized by racial discrimination and harsh labor laws.

In the early 1950s, leading members of the Kikuyu tribe, including Kenya's first president Jomo Kenyatta, formed the MauMau rebellion against the British.

Kenya gained its independence from Britain on Dec 12, 1963.

Jomo Kenyatta was the first president of Kenya.

This is Uhuru Kenyatta, the 4th and current President of Kenya. He is the son of Jomo Kenyatta.

Kenya is one of the most cosmopolitan countries in Africa - no one single cultural element can be used to describe the people as a whole

Our currency is known as the Kenya Shilling (ksh). 1 U.S. dollar is approximately $100 ksh.

Kenya is a linguistically diverse country where majority of population speak at least 3 languages.

English is the official language while Swahili (Kiswahili) is the national language. Sheng is a mixture of Swahili and English, with a bit of other languages.

There are 42 tribes in Kenya. An estimated 22% of Kenyans belong to the Kikuyu tribe.

The Maasai tribe is the most popular tribe in Kenya. They have clung to their traditional way of life, making them a symbol of Kenyan culture.

Staple foods in Kenya include; Ugali, rice, bread, chapati, Nyama (Meats): Beef, chicken, Goat, Samaki (Fish): Tilapia, Omena(sardines) and Vegetables.

When in Kenya, most people will invite you to enjoy Nyama Choma- open fire grilled red meat with ugali (Cornmeal) and Sukumawiki (Collard Greens)

Kenyans are united under the Red, White and Black colors of the flag and the spirit of "Harambee" which means pulling together as a community.

Kenya has diverse attractions to offer to our visitors. It is only a few countries around the world where one can relax on pristine sandy beaches and be able to see wildlife in all forms within a short distance.

Kenya has 60 National Parks and Reserves all with abundant wildlife.

The spectacular wildebeest migration that occurs every year in Kenya’s most visited Maasai Mara National Reserve is referred to as the 7th new wonder of the world

Kenya is a magical place. The ultimate destination offering unparalleled variety of travel and holiday experiences.
