As with many of J. Cole’s songs, Cole reflects on two different juxtapositions in No Role Modelz. The first that he, himself grew up with No Role Modelz because his own father wasn’t around. On the other hand he references how hip-hop as, we know it, is absent of role models and in the same token doesn’t want to be rescued, hip-hop wants to remain static and predictable because it’s selling, it’s easy and offers little to no disapproval amongst the masses.
