The racial categories included in the census questionnaire generally reflect a social definition of race recognized in this country and not an attempt to define race biologically, anthropologically, or genetically. In addition, it is recognized that the categories of the race item include racial and national origin or sociocultural groups. People may choose to report more than one race to indicate their racial mixture, such as “American Indian” and “White.” People who identify their origin as Hispanic, Latino, or Spanish may be of any race.

5 Offically documented races

- Felt like parents were to dismissive of racial feelings
- Felt

Lack of Empathy from Loved Ones
- Difficulty increased post-HS
- Challenge at home was to only relate to dominant race and not their other

A National Survey Of School Counselors’ Perceptions Of Multiracial Students

  • Henry Harris (2002, 2006, 2013)
  • Large Scale Survey
  • 1627 school counselors
  • Most Recent School Couneling Survey

National Survey Results:Many School Counselors attributed problems to identify. Harris believes this stems from previous research that roots in a "problematic" approach. The numbers were statically higher for counselors with only 1-5 years experience.

Suggestions

  • Do not assume the presenting problem
  • Awareness of racial factors that affect relationships
  • Allow expression of feelings // Validate them
  • Help Id and modify coping skills to empower
  • Address identity concerns if apparent
