MULTIPLE SCLEROSIS:

  • It is an autoimmune disease that affects the Brian and spinal cord.
  • (Central nervous System)
  • It eats away at the myelin sheath that covers your nerves.

SYMPTONS

  • Loss of balance
  • Muscle spasms
  • Slurred speech
  • Problems walking
  • Vision loss

DIAGNOSIS

  • May not be diagnosed for months to year after the onset of symptoms.

HOW COMMON IS IT?

  • More than 2.1 million people are affected by MS world wide.

TREATMENT

  • No cure
  • Controls symptoms, improve quality of life
  • Medications: slow progression
  • Steroids: decrease severity of attacks
  • Physical, speech and occupational therapy

AFFECTING LIFES

  • Patient may need constant assistance
  • Treatment can help them be more independent
  • Changes around the house for easier movement

HOW DOES A PERSON GET IT?

  • Prevalence of MS in the US is higher in whites.
  • MS is a disease of temperate climates.
  • Siblings of affected person have 2%-5% risk of development
  • A person born with a genetic predisposition to react to an environmental agent that
  • triggers immune-medicated response

WHAT IS GOING WRONG?

  • Within the CNS, the immune system attacks myelin & the nerve fibers themselves.
  • The damaged myelin forms scar tissue (sclerosis), which gives it it's name.
  • Suppression of enzyme transcript & protein levels are the neurotransmitter altered in MS
