Where The Red Fern Grows Summary

Where the Red Fern Grows is a movie directed by Norman Torkar based on the 1961 novel. Its genre is drama. It takes place in the mountains of Arkansas where the main character, Billy Coleman (played by Stewart Peterson), is obsessed with coon hunting along with his two dogs Dan and Ann. This drives him to enter a contest where he learns just how loyal his dogs are. Click here to go to the trailer for Where the Red Fern Grows.

Thumbs Up!

In general, the movie was very good. Stewart Peterson's acting was very good, and so was the camera work. The plot was truly legendary, and is just as unexpected as it is saddening. The clothes and costumes are okay, too. They are appropriate for the time period and location. Click here for the trailer.

Thumbs Down!

While the movie was mostly stellar, I disliked some components. Some of the acting towards the end was not so good as the rest of the movie. In general, the plot was great except for some aspects that I disliked. Like previously mentioned, the camera work was good for its period, but may be seen today as outdated. Furthermore, the special effects were also bad by today's standards.

In My Opinion

This movie was truly a timeless classic. It's the perfect example of a great story with a tragic ending. Obviously, for a movie released in 1974, the special effects were mediocre, but you can still appreciate them. All in all, it's a solid 9 out of 10.
