MOUNT ST. HELENS

  • This volcano is located in Washington State.
  • By May 1980 it was one of the worlds most monitored volcanos.
  • Helens was formed during nine eruptive periods beginning about 40-50,000
  • [Continued] years ago and has been the most active volcano in the Cascade Range during the Holocene.

Current state

ERUPTION OF 1980

  • One of the most major eruption occured on May 18, 1980.
  • It erupted about 8:32 AM and was shaken by a magnitude 5 earthquake.
  • Fifty-seven people were killed; 250 homes, 47 bridges,
  • 15 miles (24 km) of railways, and 185 miles (298 km) of highway.
  • All of the above was destroyed. Most major eruption in the USA.

PULLUTION OF VOLCANOS

  • Magma contains dissolved gases that are released into the atmosphere.
  • hazard to people, animals, and property are sulfur dioxide, carbon dioxide, and hydrogen fluoride.
  • Magma contains mineral crystals and dissolved gasses apart from the melted rock.
  • When Mount St. Helens erupted in 1980 it caused ash clouds for miles whish lasted around 8 hours.
  • The ash fallout of this eruption caused major problems in communities up to 600km or 370 miles.
