GEOGRAPHIC LOCATION

  • Tectonic plates Eurasia and the Philippine plate
  • Type of boundary Subduction
  • The location of Mount Pinatubo is Provinces of Zambales, Tarlac and Pampanga on Luzon island, Philippines so it is on a continent of East Asia.

Pinatubo was formed in 2 stages. The ancestral Pinatubo started to form about 1 million years ago, and built an andesite - dacite stratovolcano whose center was at the same location as today. Remnants of this precessor are seen in the ancient 3.5x4.5 wide caldera. Ancient Pinatubo had a number of flank vents, that formed the domes of Mount Negron, Mount Cuadrado, Mataba, Bituin plug, and the volcanic plug of Tapungho.
Deep erosion in the Sacobia, Porac, Marimla, and Porac River valleys, and weathering of the lavas suggests that activity of the ancestral volcano ended several tens of thousands of years (or more) before the caldera-forming eruption and initial growth of the modern Pinatubo (ca. 35,000 years ago).

CLASSIFICATION OF MOUNT PINATUBO

  • Mount Pinatubo is a stratovolcano
  • Mount Pinatubo eruption type is explosive

FUN FACTS, MYTHS, AND LEGENDS OF MOUNT PINATUBO

  • The height of Mt Pinatubo is only 1760 meters.
  • There is a myths about a gas monster named Polesnia that lived under where is now mt.pinatubo. He got mad at the the residents of the Philippines and decided that they should all die.
  • Last erupted June 15 1991
  • Mount Pinatubo has erupted at least 6 times in the past 35,000 years and the eruption of 1991 was one of the smallest eruptions of Mount Pinatubo but the 2 biggest eruptions of the 20th century.

AREA AROUND MOUNT PINATUNO

  • Pinatubo is flanked to the west and probably underlain by the Zambales Ophiolite Complex, an easterly-dipping section of Eocene oceanic crust which was uplifted in the late Oligocene.
  • About 2 million people where affected by the eruption
  • Around 1.2 million people lost their households
  • 846 people lost their lives
  • 50-200 meters of ash covered everything

On July 16, 1990 a 7.8 magnitude earthquake struck about 60 miles from Mount Pinatubo. That earthquake was the cause of the volcano erupting. I think if Pinatubo ever erupts again a bigger earthquake is going to cause it.

RISKS

  • If you live in a 50 mile radius it will all get covered in ash
  • From 250 miles away you can see the cloud from the volcano
  • At least 1,000 people will lose their lives
  • 2 million people will be effected

In my conclusion I have learned that Mount Pinatubo has been the second biggest eruption in the 20th century. Even though it has had bigger ones I think that in another 35,000 years there are going to be 6 or more eruptions.
