PRESENTATION OUTLINE

RHEA'S MOTION CURATION

Essential question
How do we measure and describe motion?

The speed of my dog running 5 meters

Procedure:

  • Measure 5 meters from where you are standing
  • Tell your dog to sit on the 5m mark
  • Start a timer as you call your dog to you
  • Stop the timer when your dog gets there
  • Record the data

Data
She ran 5 meters in 2.23 seconds on average
She went 2.2 meters per second

*Extra Stuff*
She was running on flat ground if she was running uphill she would take a lot longer and probably slow down for the last 2 or 3 times.
If I made her run at night she would have gone a lot faster because when we are gone at school all day she sleeps and at night she was a lot of energy.

The speed of the smell ammonia

PROCEDURE

  • Stand 300cm away from eachother
  • Make sure the other person cant tell when you open the bottle
  • When you open the bottle start the timer
  • When the other person can smell it stop the timer

Data
The smell of ammonia travels 300cm in 231.29seconds on average
It can travel 0.8cm (8mm) per second

*Extra Stuff*
We had to have the same person trying to smell the ammonia every time because if we changed it the data would be different
If we did the test outside it would never work because of the wind
We had to do the test in the same room but we had to let it air out each time

THE GROWTH OF BEANS

PROCEDURE

  • Put 6 beans in a plastic bag with a paper towel
  • Put water on the paper towel and seal the bag
  • Wait a week
  • Measure the three largest
  • Record the data

Data
In 7 days the beans grew 5.3cm (53mm) on average
They grew 0.8cm per day

*Extra Stuff*
I only had to measure three of the beans but I used 6 because if some of them didn't grow at all I would have more to use.
If I put them in the sun instead of in a cubby they probably would have grown more
