New Moon is when the moon is completly black.

Waxing Crescent is when you can only see a crescent of the moon. A sliver of the moon.

First Quarter is when only the right side of the moon is lit. It is only lit because the earth is blocking the other half.

Waxing Gibbous is when 3/4 of the moon is lit. The other 1/4 of the moon is blocked by the earth.

Full Moon is when the moon is fully lit by the sun. Nothing is blocking the sun from hitting the moon.

Waning gibbous is when 3/4 of the moon is lit on the left side. The other 1/4 is blocked by the earth.

Third Quarter is when the left half is lit. The other half is blocked by the earth.

Waning Crescent is when a sliver of the left side of the moon is lit. The other part of the moon is blocked by the earth.

Waxing means getting bigger but the moon is not getting bigger. The lit side of the moon is getting bigger because of the sun.

Waning means getting smaller but the moon is'nt getting smaller the lit part of the moon is getting smaller because of the sun and earth moving.

A solar eclipse is when the moon gets in the suns light path that is hitting the earth.
