FACTS

  • The monkeypox usually lasts 2-4 weeks
  • Spread into the United States from the import of an animal from Ghana to Texas
  • Any mammal can become ill with monkeypox
  • Seeing a health care provider is the best thing to do if infected
  • Monkeypox is less severe than smallpox
  • The cases were diagnosed in remote areas of central and west Africa
  • Most common animal in the Midwest to get infected with monkeypox is a prairie dog
  • The end of June , monkeypox was in six Midwestern states
  • Animals infected in the United States came from pet stores in 2003
  • Monkeypox is much less easily transmitted person-to-person than smallpox and has a much lower fatality rate

When did the outbreak occur??
The outbreak was in1970 of the Congo then later on in 2003 it was confirmed in Indiana, Illinois, and Wisconsin.

WHERE did the outbreak occur??
In 1996-97 it occurred in the Democratic Republic of Congo.

How did it start??
The monkeypox is mainly in the rainforests of Africa.

How did the disease spread??
The disease is spread by an infected animal or its body fluids. It can also be spread by person to person if you have the disease.

How many people died??
No fatalities occurred in the U.S. outbreak but some cases in Africa have died.

What are the symptoms??
Chills, sweat, rash, fever, headache, sore throat, nausea and/or vomiting

How was the spread of the disease stopped??
It was stopped by people not touching the animals and isolating themselfs

Did the methods to stop the spread work??
Yes, because they killed the animals that were infected and they were isolated till the crusts were gone.
