MONEY

Our Attitudes and Beliefs

It's Not Really About Money...

  • It's about our relationship with money
  • The attitudes, positions, beliefs, and emotions that are inherent within this relationship

Ubiquitous In Our Lives

  • Money plays a keen role in almost every aspect of our lives
  • Our relationships with it can show us a lot about our relationship with ourselves and others.

Expectations

  • We place a lot of expectations on money, and its ability to "make us or break us", especially in the eyes of others

Let's Examine Our Relationship With $

  • It is the attitudes and beliefs you carry with you as you interact with $.
  • Do you feel guilty when you treat yourself to something "nice"?
  • Do you ever feel frustrated with your $ situation?
  • Do you keep having $ mishaps?

Let's Examine Our Relationship With $

  • Do you feel embarrassment or shame when comparing yourself to others?
  • Do you ever feel like you can't quite ever do enough?
  • Is it a source of constant worry?
  • What messages did you receive about money, while growing, up that you may carry with you today?

Money Issues

  • Our money issues generally aren't about money
  • What they are really about is how those issues are helping us to feel
  • Those feelings can help us uncover unconscious patterns and beliefs that keep us locked in particular ways of relating with money

Money Issues

  • For example, many people have a fear of failure, and they see the outcome as being jobless, penniless, and homeless.
  • The real fear about being homeless, is how we would feel, because it is something we deeply and unconsciously identify with.

Money Issues

  • In reality, what the person really fears is feeling like a disappointment. "I'm a disappointment"
  • This is the belief that was once unconscious, directing one's life and choices.

Money Issues

  • Over and over this belief will gain confirmation as TRUE, when we experience the same emotion in different situations regarding money
  • For example, maybe you feel disappointment in how much money you make, how you make your money, or when you compare yourself to others and their financial situation.

What Keeps Us From Seeing It

  • Whatever our primary $ issue is, it is often obscured by feelings of guilt or shame.
  • While we are mired in these feelings, they act as a buffer that keeps the real issues in the shadows and out of our awareness.

Time = Money

  • We live in a culture where time and money are often synonymous.
  • People often have a hard time just doing nothing...giving ouselves time to lounge at the beach, indulge in a great book, or taking a nap, are things that are often judged.

So What Can You Do?

  • Outside of practical action steps, like saving, or monitoring spending habits, begin to notice how you feel when spending or earning money, or when you give yourself time.
