Roles of the Tribe

  • The mohawk men had the role of hunting food for their tribe, trading, and war.
  • The mohawk women were in charge of farming, property, and family.

Food

  • The Mohawk tribe got food by hunting elk, deer and other animals. They also grew crops like corn and wheat and picked wild berries.
  • Some of the main foods in the Mohawk tribe was elk stew and cornbread.

Daily life

  • Mohawk men worked hard everyday to provide food for the tribe while the women worked on their chores like cooking food and taking care of the children.

Spiritual Beliefs/gods

  • The sky women-Said to have fallen through a hole in the sky.
  • The Twin Gods
  • The Thunders- powerful storm spirits that live in the sky and create thunder and lightning.

Housing

  • They built long houses made of frames and elm wood.
  • The Mohawk people built the structure of the building out of framung and then put a layer of elm wood over the frames.

Weopons

  • The club, used for close attacks. Mainly made from wood and bones.
  • The bow and arrow, used for long range attacks, as well as hunting wild animals for their skins and other materials.

  • Mohawk Women where wraparound skirts with shorter leggings.

Where they lived

  • The mohawk people are original people of New York.
  • Some Mohawk people still live in New York today. However, most Mohawk people retreated to Canada in the 1700's.
