Matteo Ricci
Italian Jesuit missionary, taught about Christianity in Asia
Wrote several books in Chinese and studied the culture of China
Met Li Zhizao, Xu Guangqi, and Yang Tingyun who were known as the “Three Pillars of Chinese Catholicism”
St. Peter Claver
Spanish Jesuit who baptized around 300,000 slaves
Hated the transatlantic slave trade and brought food/medicine to plantations
On plantation visits, he was known for sleeping in the slave’s quarters, refusing the owner’s hospitality
Pedro Arrupe
Elected as the superior general of the Society of Jesus in 1956
Missionary to Japan and was accused of being a spy after Pearl Harbor
Survived the nuclear bomb on Hiroshima and treated 200 others using previous medical experience
Ignacio Ellacuría
Missionary in El Salvador, joined the Jesuits in 1947
Received death threats but continued preaching, was murdered by an elite army unit in 1989
In 1985 he helped mediate the release of the kidnapped daughter of President José Napoleon Duarte
