PRESENTATION OUTLINE

MINNESOTA FORESTRY

Untitled Slide

  • Forestry is a very common occupation in the northern half of Minnesota, it provides local and national consumers with MN pine, birch, and Aspen lumber.
  • Forestry also provides many job opportunities for years to come in MN.

REGULATIONS

  • After harvesting lumber the harvesters must plant the same species of sapling were they had harvested to keep an even ratio of young forest to old forest.
  • Foresters must obtain a valid MN lumber permit to harvest on selected state lands.
  • Foresters must watch for potential wildfires during Summer and Fall, many loggers stop production during these dry season to prevent wildfires.

CONCERNS

  • Many concerns arose about what repeated timber harvesting will do to the enviromnent, some of the concerns are loss of soil nutritions, soil damadge, biodiversity and lack of wildlife habitat.

HOW THE CONCERNS EFFECT US

  • The concerns can effect Minnesotans, lack of soil nutrition makes it hard for us to plant oxygen producing plants in the future, it also makes it hard to grow food producing plants.
  • The concerns also affect MN lumber producers it will make it harder to get a good yield in the future without heavy fertilizers .
  • Cutting down forest also makes it hard for wildlife to find habitat which will spike population of certain areas, it also makes more wildlife resort to human populated land.

RECENT NEWS

  • The winter timber permit holders of 2015-2016 have stopped production because of the recent heat waves, the permit holders had gotten offered a one year interest free extension on the permit, from the Minnesota DNR Timber Sales Program Supervisor.
