Invention of M&m's

  • Forrest Mars came up with the idea for M&M's in the 1930s
  • He saw soldiers eating chocolate with a shell of tempered chocolate
  • Mars received a patent for his own process on March 3, 1941

The first M&M's

  • The first M&M's were milk chocolate
  • They were introduced in 1941
  • Original colors were brown, yellow, green, red, and violet

History of M&M's

  • Production began in 1941 in a factory in New Jersey
  • During World War II, M&M's were sold exclusively to the military
  • In 1950, a black "M" was imprinted on the candies
  • It was changed to white in 1954

Peanut M&M's

  • Peanut M&M's were introduced in 1954
  • First appeared only in the color tan
  • When peanut M&M's made their debut, so did the tagline:
  •  'Melts in your mouth, not in your hand.'
  • In 1960, M&M's added the yellow, red, and green colors

  • In the 1980s, M&M's were introduced internationally
  • In 1986, M&M's launched HOLIDAYS Chocolate Candies
  • Easter candies had bunny, chick, and egg symbols on pastel-colored shells
  • Christmas candies had pine tree and candle symbols on red and green shells;

Introduction of Flavors

  • In 1991, Peanut Butter M&M's were released
  • In 1996, Mars introduced "M&M's Minis"
