Pathology

COLLECTION OF SEMEN

  • Semen for examination is collected after at least 3days of abstinence from intercourse.
  • At least 30mints is given for liquefaction.
  • After collection microscopic examination is completed between 1-2 hrs of collection.

NORMAL VOLUE OF THE SPERM

  • Formula of sperm cont=(sperm counted in 4 squares *10*20*1000)/4
  • Normal sperm count : 40 - 160 millions/ml

ABNORMAL FORMS OF SPERM

  • Giant head sperm
  • Pin head sperm
  • Immature tail sperm
  • Double tail sperm
  • Double head sperm
  • Amorphous form of sperm

DISORDERS

  • Azoospermia :~
  • If spermatozoa is completely absent in the semen than that condition is called azoospermia
  • Oligospermia:~
  • Oligospermia denote to low sperm count often with decreased motility

PHYSICAL EXAMINATION OF SEMEN

PHYSICAL EXAMINATION OF SPERM

  • Volume
  • Consistency or liquefaction
  • Ph
  • Viscosity

VOLUME

  • The normal volume average from 2-5ml .
  • The volume does not vary significantly with the period of abstinence.

CONSISTENCY OR LIQUEFACATION

  • Observer the consistency of the semen at the time of receiving the sample & note the time taken for the specimen to liquefy.
  • Normally it liquefies between 30-40 minutes

PH OF THE SEMEN

  • Ph normal range from 7.0-7.7

VISCOSITY

  • Normal semen is slightly viscous form
  • Abnormal semen is very much viscous
  • In other conditions it may be watery.
